Tomoe is an extremely dark brown which can look black, russet or violet toned, depending on the light. Veils of tonal color within this base shift the color with copper, blue and green.

Tomoe Gozen is a legendary fighter during the Genpei war. Some call her the only true female samurai, though the term "onna musha" or "onna bugeisha" is a more accurate description. Her skill with the sword, naginata, bow and arrow, and intense loyalty have made her the most famous female fighter in Japan. She was said to have been "well respected by men." So much so that she led soldiers for her daimyo as one of his senior captains. (Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi)

Second to her ability in combat was her beauty. In the Heike Monogatari (The Tale of the Heike, translation by Helen Craig McCullough), Tomoe Gozen is described to be "especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features." Some legends tell that she was the vicious reincarnation of a river goddess. wiki/Tomoe_Gozen

IGNIS ANTIQUITA is a permanent collection of 40 multichromatic eyeshadows inspired by the amazing, fiery, passionate, strong women who have been largely forgotten in our history books, or had their histories revised due to the fact that they were what they were- WOMEN! Historically seen as the weaker sex, women were typically unable to contribute to politics, academia, science, or war. But what little we know about these women is proof that women are far greater than the sum of their parts. They are a force to be reckoned with.

The name "Ignis Antiquita" is beautifully representative of the sentiment behind this collection. It is Latin, and translates to English as "Ancient Fire" or "Fire of Old". Ignis is fire- as it relates to the fiery spirit and passion. Antiquita is old, ancient, time-honored, revered, primeval. The collection features women from ancient times, spanning many cultures and areas. While not everyone spoke Latin, it is undoubtedly one of the most widely spoken languages of the ancient world, which many current day languages are rooted in.

This collection features beautiful eyeshadow shades all inspired by different women in ancient history, we didn't want to use words relating to "beauty" in this collection. Mainly because whether or not these women were beautiful is inconsequential at this point in time. It is their passionate spirit, their intelligence, bravery, strength, and indomitable will that lives on. And so it is for all of us. Living in a society that is dominated by the value of female beauty, we often judge ourselves by cultural standards of beauty and femininity.

Some days it seems like all of the other positive contributions we might make pale in comparison to the most fleeting aspect of who we truly are-- our looks. This collection is there to remind you of the paths that came before you, and the feminine energy and strength that is part of your past. Reconnect with it daily as you choose your eyeshadow colors and learn each woman's history. These women may be barely mentioned in History books, but in all women they endure.

VIEWING SUGGESTION: When you receive your samples or full sizes, you will best view the colors in natural sunlight or direct overhead lighting. The worst lighting to evaluate your samples in is fluorescent or CFL (compact fluorescent) lighting. Diffused bathroom lighting is also not optimal. These shadows change drastically based on the lighting you view them in. Test samples in sunlight for the best assessment of color and effects.

APPLICATION TIPS: These colors apply best over a light layer of primer, patted or brushed gently. The multichrome effects of the colors become muted if you use heavy primer or a strong glue/epoxy type of primer- or foiling. Best effects are achieved with a light layer of a primer such as Nyx or Two Faced eyeshadow primer. Repeated brushing or buffing will also mute the chromatic effects. You can use them without primer, but the chromatic effects will be more delicate and only visible in certain lighting.
