"And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth"
- Revelation 12:1-4
The Great Red Dragon Paintings are a series of watercolors by the English poet and painter William Blake, commissioned in 1805. Blake’s task was to create paintings to illustrate books of the Bible. There are four noted dragon paintings depicting the Biblical dragon in various scenes from the Book of Revelation.
Author Thomas Harris’s literary character Francis Dolarhyde is a serial killer, obsessed with one of Blake’s dragon paintings. He has a giant tattoo of the dragon on his back, visits the museum housing the painting and eats it, and kills entire families to "become" the dragon. Some of Dolarhyde’s most noted dragon quotes:
I'm the great Red Dragon. I am not a man. I began as one, but now I am becoming more than a man, as you will witness.
I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly. Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe.
